Dissertation Journeys: From Initial Interest to Committee-Approved Dissertation Topic
The journey from a first-semester PhD student to a dissertator is one that can seem intimidating if not insurmountable. To offer clarity, advice, and insights to that process, specifically focusing on students enrolled in language-related PhD programs, the Second Language Acquisition (SLA) Graduate Student Organization is putting on a Professional Development event. Four of the SLA program’s amazing current dissertators–Eric Ho, José Luis Garrido Rivera, Scott Stillar, and Marina Tsylina–will be describing their dissertation journeys, covering topics including classes that inspired them, strategies for investigating different interests, descriptions of collaborating effectively with advisors/committee members, approaches to the prelim/proposal, and how they ended up at their current, narrowed dissertation topics/methodologies. Everyone is invited to come, ask questions, share insights, and enjoy some light refreshments! Please click here to register for this event. We hope to see you there!
Organized by SLA Graduate Student Organization co-presidents Tim Cavnar and Gordon West
