Introduction to ELAN

Assistant Professor Wesley dos Santos, Language Sciences Program

In this session, I will introduce ELAN, one of the most standard software tools used in language documentation and other linguistics projects. ELAN is described as: “an annotation tool for audio and video recordings. With ELAN a user can add an unlimited number of textual annotations to audio and/or video recordings. An annotation can be a sentence, word or gloss, a comment, translation or a description of any feature observed in the media. Annotations can be created on multiple layers, called tiers. Tiers can be hierarchically interconnected. An annotation can either be time-aligned to the media or it can refer to other existing annotations. The content of annotations consists of Unicode text and annotation documents are stored in an XML format (EAF).”

Please have the following on your computer for this session:

— ELAN Installed (https://archive.mpi.nl/tla/elan/download)

— An .mp4 video file and corresponding .wav audio file. If you don’t have your own to bring, go to https://www.elararchive.org/uncategorized/IO_87043802-9e54-41d2-a815-93f3af61e947/ and click the little download arrow in the middle right (disregard what it says about how the file can’t be displayed, etc.!)

— The ELAN template file (https://www.elararchive.org/download/file/IO_20788cb2-9a6d-48f1-9314-22fbaaccd472)
