Lang Sci at Languages of the World Day

On March 1, 2023 over 500 Wisconsin high school students visited UW-Madison for the biennial Languages of the World Day, organized by The Language Institute. The students participated in interactive workshops with language faculty and staff, including a couple of people from Lang Sci!

Linguistics PhD student Charlotte Vanhecke, who works as a Dutch TA, used a musical approach to make language learning fun with “Dutch Language Through Song.”

And in “Building Blocks of Sound in Languages Across the World,” Lang Sci academic staff member Rebecca Shields showed students how a little phonetics and the International Phonetic Alphabet can help them to pronounce many different sounds not found in English.
