1151 Seminar Room schedule – visible on Outlook shared calendars (Van Hise 1151 – Language Sciences classroom)
- Open for drop-in use when free
- Email Becky to reserve (or Lang Sci faculty can schedule directly in Outlook, by creating an event in their own personal Outlook calendar and choosing “Van Hise 1151” as the location from the drop down list).

How to…?
- Enroll in courses:
- Meet with your faculty advisor to discuss course plan.
- Email Becky your approved course plan, copying your advisor. Becky will authorize you to enroll.
- Change my faculty advisor:
- Ask the new advisor if they agree to be your advisor.
- Inform your previous advisor of the change.
- Email Becky with notification of the change.
- Declare my PhD Minor:
- Meet with your faculty advisor for approval.
- If completing an external PhD Minor, meet with the advisor of the external program (not needed for a distributed minor).
- Declare the PhD Minor in the Grad Portal in MyUW (see the PhD Minor page for more information).
- Ask a question about Benefits or a TA appointment – email our HR rep Laurel Buss, or visit her office in 770 Van Hise Tue-Thur.
- Apply for an exception to the PhD requirements (substitute a different course for a requirement, request an extension on a deadline, etc.):
- Speak with your faculty advisor for approval first.
- Email DPC chair Becky with details of the rules exception you are requesting, and the justification for your request. The Lang Sci Degree Programs Committee will evaluate and provide a decision. Note that evaluation of requests may take several weeks, so make sure to apply well ahead of deadlines.
- Schedule my Prelim or dissertation defense:
- Work with your committee to schedule the defense.
- Fill out the defense scheduling form as soon as the date is set.
- Send final draft to all committee members at least 2 weeks before scheduled defense date.
- Make sure to check the Grad School deadlines to understand when your change of status (conferral of degree or advance to dissertator status) will take effect.
- Receive my MA degree:
- Once you have completed all the MA coursework requirements, and scheduled your first Prelim defense, make sure to add the Linguistics MA to your enrolled plans in your MyUW Grad Portal (see here for instructions).
- Consult the Grad School’s deadlines page for information about timing and when your MA degree will be conferred.
- Request funding for travel to present at a conference:

- Also consider applying for funding from the Graduate School (currently open only to dissertators).
- Request funding for research expenses, such as travel for fieldwork or to pay participants:

- Apply for the Summer Dissertator Fellowship (for students who have been admitted to candidacy):
Advising/Curricular documents
- List of undergraduate Linguistics majors
- List of graduate students by year
- Linguistics course and enrollment history
- Advising/Curricular Box folder (handouts, course schedules, etc.)
How to…?
- Reserve a room for colloquia, special event, etc. – email Becky
- Request a key to a room – check if a spare key is available, if not email Joslyn
- Order supplies and equipment
- Contact director for approval first
- IT purchases – need to be made via L&S IT, which you can initiate by emailing them at help@its.ls.wisc.edu
- Other items need to be ordered from vendors within ShopUW+ in Workday – email Joslyn with questions. (Instructions on finding ShopUW+ and purchasing items there)
- Share news item for our social media – email Becky with photo and text to share
- Grant a student permission to enroll in a course or independent study – email Becky
- Hire a student hourly worker – email Laurel Buss with details of your hire (student name and ID, salary, funding string, hiring period, job title and type).
- Other HR tasks – email Laurel Buss, or stop by her office in 770 Van Hise T-R.
- Update my website profile or research page info – email Becky
- Read the Travel Overview from Business Services for many helpful links and policies.
- Use Concur to book travel that is being paid for or reimbursed by the University. (Note: students receiving a travel award scholarship do not need to book through Concur.)
- If using your own card, submit an Expense Reimbursement form online. Make sure to include your receipt, business purpose, link to the event page, and date of the event.
