Exploring Language, Gender, and Religion at an Islamic Radio Station in Tanzania

Katrina Daly Thompson, UW-Madison Dept. of African Cultural Studies and Language Sciences

Dr. Thompson spent July 2023 conducting linguistic ethnographic research at Radio Nuur, a nondenominational Islamic radio station in Tanga, Tanzania. In this presentation, Thompson will describe the setting, their research questions and methods, and some preliminary observations of linguistic issues that arose in the field, especially in relation to religion and gender.
