Immersion input and the future of revitalizing languages: Evidence from Kaqchikel and beyond
Raina Heaton, University of Oklahoma
This talk synthesizes the results of several streams of research on the linguistic input provided in Indigenous language immersion classrooms with the aim of gaining a broader perspective on progress towards community goals of reversing language shift through this type of language revitalization. Findings are presented related to different quality and quantity metrics for teacher speech. Data come primarily from Kaqchikel (Mayan), with comparative and supplemental information from Western Subanon, Māori, and various Indigenous languages of the US.
