UW-Madison once again sent a robust crew to the annual MidPhon meeting (29th Mid-Continental Phonetics and Phonology Meeting), which in 2024 was hosted by the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign on October 4-5.
This year the following UW-Madison linguists from various departments gave posters or presentations at the meeting:
- Plosive Voicing Alternation in Turkish – Jae Weller (Linguistics PhD student) and Eric Raimy (English and Language Sciences faculty)
- Cascading activation drives incomplete neutralization: An internet-based study of Mandarin 3rd tone sandhi – Yuyu Zeng (Postdoc in the Speech Motor Neuroscience Lab), Chang Wang, and Jie Zhang (Chinese PhD students)
- Child and adult voice onset time in Northern East Cree – Luke Annear and Rachyl Hietpas (Linguistics PhD students)
This conference continues to be a strong outlet for the varied and interesting work in Phonetics/Phonology taking place on our campus!
